This is being updated new to old…
Start the school year off right by getting yourself organized and ready to go. School time / schedule effects everyone in the house and it does not have to be a hectic mess, but it will take some prep from you. They are kids… if the morning time is sucking ass… it is most likely due to lack of planning. This falls on the parents… remember you are in charge – NOT THEM! Don’t get me wrong there are things that happen that are out of control like “attitudes”, but do what you can when you can.
Everone has their own thoughts on mornings and back to school… this is just my little (BIG) opinion. I would say our mornings are good and it has a lot to do with the planning, but mostly because my kids have a great attitude about school. If your back to school routine sucks… hopefully this helps! Have a great school year.

BACK TO SCHOOL CAKE
Well I did not fuck it up!!! First time doing a drizzle cake. I went for the wax drizzle effect… YES! That’s a thing!! Hopefully, I will have time this weekend to put together a how to… because this was way easier than I imagined!!! Also, I see many more drizzle cakes in our future.
The GIANT record on top is from these AMAZING LADIES!!!! Every single time I come to them with an idea they come through and then some! They also made the little record and the cassette chocolates the kids got earlier in the week. Check out their website… here
BREAKFAST FOR DINNER
This year is all about embracing change and mixing things up in this house! The kids and I love our traditions… but in order to take some stress off of the day / mornings there are some things getting changed over here… and it seems to be working out just fine.
First day of school in this house has always meant fruity pebble pancakes! However, this year we have a middle schooler and a high schooler with staggered times and a crazy morning. So we discussed changing the tradition to breakfast for dinner. It took the stress off of the morning and allowed us to chat about the day while we enjoyed the same traditional meal… just in reverse order! Looks like a new tradition has been formed – or rather…. reimagined!
the best pancakes
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 cups bisquick
- 2 tbsp instant pudding
- mix all ingredients together
- heat griddle to 375, spray with cooking oil
- pour a 1/4 of a cup of batter into pan, cook until it bubbles a bit, flip and cook on the other side a little less
- and enjoy
- try topping it with fruity pebbles, chocolare chips.
- wrap in wax paper – freeze and you can reheat in the toaster!
Another change this year is less time in the house before we leave for school. I could get Saoirse up for school earlier, sleep is needed especially by teenagers!!! Realistically, we will have late nights with homework and activities. We still need to squeeze every second out of the morning. So we decided hair and breakfast will happen in the car, not ideal so we are structuring it as much as possible. Making some egg sandwiches in advance and freezing. Carnation instant breakfast milk – cause growing girls need this milk. Put it all in a cute little caddy and we off to school!
STARTING HIGH SCHOOL
Orientation went better than we hoped. Everyone was over the top nice, informative and so excited to start the new year. Every single student we came across seemed genuinely thrilled to be there. Not sure I thrilled about this road every day…. haha.
She is more than ready to start but joked on the way home… no mom… I’m not ready! In all seriousness… she is a tad nervous, like all kids. However, you would never notice by the way she carries herself. She beams with confidence and excitement… it is just amazing to see! She will do great things!
The children requested something like a lunchable but not a lunchable and no bread. So here is what we have. We got the meat and cheese cut at the deli because they wanted American cheese and thick turkey. These bento boxes have an AMAZING SEAL. I was able to make the lunches the night before and even load the crackers. They kept their crispiness overnight and all the way to lunch – #winning!!!
Sassy Lunch Notes for Tiny
THE BOY & middle school
My baby started middle school today. We have been so busy that this has not sunk in for me yet, I see a breakdown over the weekend when we have a chance to exhale. He has been so easy going and excited it is unreal. The kid stayed up late last week and wrote out his schedule and then the night before school started he typed it up, printed it and figured out how to run the laminator and laminated it. He as up, dressed and ready to go with ZERO issues. I received “luv u” texts during the day and when he got in the car he was over the moon excited about every class, seeing his buddies and he even got breakfast (he is the first kid in this house to eat school food – and he liked it!).
When I dropped him off this morning he was even chatting with someone he didn’t know – I love how excited this kid is about literally EVERYTHING!!! Most days I want to ring his neck because his energy is so over the top but at the same time it is what I love most about him. Cheers to this kid and the amazing year he is going to make for himself!!!
DECLUTTER & ORGANIZE
School here is a positive thing, so we like to fully embrace it. We slowly start a few weeks before school starts. Purging closets, decluttering and restocking helps to make things run a lot smoother when school starts. I usually end up walking around painting scuff marks on the walls when we declutter. I feel like when you clean you start to notice all the little things, like finger prints and chocoalte milk dripping down random walls… so washing and painting usually goes hand in hand with decluttering for me.
PANTRY & SNACKS
We do go through the canned goods and donate the things we purchased and in all honesty just wont eat before it goes bad. We ditch the open bags of chips that went stale and basically just regroup the pantry. Like most houses we have an issue with snacks disappearing BEFORE we think they should. So when it comes to back to school, I like to hide them. This way I am not running out the store unplanned. When I can, I purchase about 3 weeks worth of snacks and drinks for lunches. The week we are in go in a daily bins in the kitchen so I can just grab these when I make lunches (at night). The other 2 weeks go in containers and get hidden. This ensures I am not assed out because the little rug-rats are stealing snacks.
YES – I do make my kids lunches still. Everyone has an opinion on this and so do I. Right now, I believe that their job is to learn. We have complete faith they will know how to make a sandwich and throw a bag of chips into a bag when they are older, I do not need to teach them this. Someday they will be grown and gone and I will wish I could make their lunches, so for now I will do it. Also, I think in the middle of the day when things might be rough, they open their lunch that I made for them and know… I am there for them always. Yup – you guessed it – I put notes in their lunches. I also do not give a fuck if someone makes fun of them… because I also know my kids will stand up for themselves and put that little asshat in their place.
I have listed some uplifting lunch cards here…
If you are looking to add a stupid joke to their lunch box – check these out
This is used for the daily snacks, for the week we are in.
This organizer is great for water bottles!… get it here
Hide the next 2 weeks or so of snack from the rug-rats.
The first couple weeks are crazy when the kids go back to school. There are always trips to the store to buy dumb folders and tabs. Not to mention the new schedule that needs to be figured out, homework, showers, dinner time, activities… OH MY! It is a fantastic idea to have a few meals prepped and ready to go. Here are some meals you can prep and freeze. You can make these in the instant pot as well.
Luckily my kids like PLAIN sandwiches. I have come up with an awesome plan for us. Martin’s Potato Rolls are great for sandwiches, they do not dry out. Get the rolls, not the bread. You can make 5 days worth of meat and cheese sandwiches, bag them and put them in the fridge and it cuts down on so much time!!
We are 2 weeks out before school starts and I am about to make an entire loaf of french toast, bag them individual servings and freeze. These can come right out of the freezer and be heated up in the toaster oven. Muffins – fresh blueberries are in right now so I will also be making about a dozen or so of these, bagging indiviually and freezing as well.
Looking for some breakfast recipes… try these.
What are your go to school snacks? I usually add a chip and a sweet treat to their lunch. Veggies and fruit we just save for breakfast and dinners, otherwise it will just get wasted! I go like to grab some cookies from the bakery or make my own for their lunches, but to ensure they last and do not go bad I do prebag for lunches and pop in the freezer. Make certain to hide them in the freezer so they don’t magically disappear.
PLANNER / CALENDARS
If you do not use a family calendar – GET ONE! Each one of the kids start the year with a new planner and we also have a family calendar. It’s important to have everyone know what is going on, it’s just easier! NO SURPRISES!!! This is the planner the kids have this year… it has a spot for everything.
Be certain to schedule down time for not only the kids but for yourself. Don’t burn out too early in the year, make sure everyone has downtime to regroup daily. Don’t over book the kids!
Why Why Why!!!! Why are you waiting until morning or the night before to pick out the clothing for your kids? Why are you letting them pick them out in the morning? Get your laundry done on the weekend and have them pick out their outfits for the week. There are cute ones for little kids who are learning Monday through Friday. Also, for older kids there are plain ones and you can add accessories to the side.
BACK TO SCHOOL PRODUCTS
Saoirse will be taking geometry this year. So expensive calculator it is… why are we not using an app for this? Anyways here are the products we needed to get.
